hello,

i went for a long rollerblade this morning. an hour, in the not so strong sun. plenty warm. i over did it a little bit, as i have been fit for doing nothing since. however, i bladed thru the farmer's market about 1/4 mile from where i live. their are artist vending their wares. i asked if it costs anything. it doesn't!

so wed. 7-2 and sat. 7-12 are farmer's market days. first friday once a month is highly trafficked in summer.  these give me a few options right off the bat to see how my product sales.

i spoke to a man that attends these, and he says he sets up 4 hours before first friday (5-8pm) to get a choice spot in front of the museum.

good info to know.

if i can turn over some money, etc, i may want to look into a satellite / kiosk in the mall for winter.

a day at a time,

Hello,

Today I miss the people I work with. I miss the energy of people, and I miss working at TJ. It was a happy place for me, minus the bunglings and witch hunts of upper management.

Suzanne is coming over today to see my apt and have lunch. My schedule never allowed for this. She is the woman that had an art gallery and hosts movies in her home on Friday night. I'm a little sad today.

I did put my notice in to get a dog, ie the doctor's note. It is not from a psychiatrist and says that I have a history of depression and the doctor would recommend a dog for that. So, that process is in the works.

Doing the last of the sewing today and display set-up for the trial run in the market place tomorrow!

Beyond that, I was wondering if this is something you could/ would sell in your gallery:

To: Linda Simmon

Hello,

I am doing email marketing today to the Portland Museum of Arts, and to the buyer at Portland Wholefoods. Of course, this gives me a direction to further pursue, which is ALL the Wholefoods, and contemporary museums. However, I need to pace myself, in the advent that I get a lot of orders, that I can produce them with the means and materials I have on hand, and grow into bigger operations. I would love to have my product in NYC Museum of Modern Art or CA Museum of Contemporary Art: They get tons of visitors all looking for a memento...

The other reason to pace is so that I can learn the process of purchase orders / terms and adjust my learning curve with buyers.

While at the Portland Museum, I was looking at the product they offered. They are selling items in the flavor of Winslow Homer / an old Maine artist, such as a canvas fabric (like I use in painting houses) with dirty splotches of paint on it and a chunky zipper to make a zip-top folder the size of a notebook. The price is ... $90 !!!!

There is no way on god's earth this price can be justified for a simple construction zip pouch with dirty scrubs. I don't think any of them will sale, but maybe when it is marked down 90%. But, it got me thinking that by putting my item in a museum, I get to elevate the price. Even if it were just a few dollars per item, I am living better, and the price doubled for retail is well under $20 per unit, and possibly $15.

It got me thinking that I don't have to drive my price down to the barest minimum in order to be sought and bought by a buyer.

My personal feelings about Museum stores and the items in it is 1. they are over-priced. although, i do like to dawdle at the MOMA as i love to see new and modern utility items. 2. what is being sold is ersatz and feels it. it is a knock off of the original, meant to give the beholder a taste of the artist's work, but it leaves me feeling the item is stodgy and has no original spirit.

If my items were available in a museum, they wouldn't feel stodgy. They would feel of the times, new and bright. Museums could definitely use something like this in their storehouse of treasures.

How are you today?

I've gotten over feeling sad about my crew mates, and am enjoying my new life. It doesn't seem so little and it is starting to feel earnestly full of possibility. I have been listening to the sessions you recommended, often, to counteract low-energy, and getting over humps like going to market for the first time on first friday. I sold 12 bags for 12.  It's a little something in the right direction ...

i'm sorry about the little bitch! i can certainly understand untenable situations vs the desire to keep the peace and security. do you think it is more of the uranus square?

after first friday, i was breaking down my display and moving it across the street and a guy asked if he could help. i said yes. he carried a chair. we brought everything into the gallery of my apartment building, then he asked he we were going to leave it there. i said we could bring it up stairs, and i took half to the community room and the other half to my apartment.

he said he was from canada and interviewing for a programming job, and wanted to know if i wanted to tool around as there were many people out and about that night. i said sure, wanted to grab a piece of pizza, i could help him find his bank, and that i would be retiring early as i get up early the next morning.

he asked if he could leave his pack in my apartment, and i said ok, as i had already specified my stipulations for the evening.

when we returned, i was hinting that i would like to take a shower to get to sleep, and he wanted to know if we could take a shower together.

i said NO before he could finish "together"-- then he said he could help me with rent by sleeping on my couch. i said that i am all right ... and waited for him to make the decision to leave my apartment.

i was really peeved that night, looking back, and could see how he was scrutinizing me for weaknesses, and trying to make himself overly helpful, not because he is helpful by nature, but as a way to get me to help him. He wanted to fill my water filter. I am like, It is Fine!

He put his arms around me when we were walking around like we had been partners for years. It was just weird.

I don't know if he has been calling as I have answered any numbers that don't show a name on my phone, but it has left me with a bizarre and flatly not interested taste in my mouth. I didn't even know his name.

Just glad I culminated the evening and conversation at is fulcrum with an astonishing No. It shut him down as he tried to deflect and looked small on my couch, AND like he didn't belong there. By the way, prior to that, he was making it look like it was his own.

Hello Angela,

I did not get a chance to say hello to you on First Friday, but Richard has shown me photos of your display and I must say it looks grand.

I sold 5 photo cards and 1 egg...so a little money for the gas tank...I hope you did better than me AND

did you get the gig with the cheese people?  If not I saw that Lovell Designs in the Old Port is hiring - I thought you would look fabulous wearing their things ergo you would want to work there?  I dunno, but I was thinking of you today when we walked past them and there was a sign in the window.  It said that you would have to be able to work at their store in Freeport and also do craft shows, I don't know if that would appeal to you or not?  (i hope you are selling cheese though)

Miss MECA approached Richard and I outside, begging for a cig.  It isn't polite to snarl at people, so I held back.

And there is going to be a computer in the work room now, something Avesta is providing for the residents, and they asked me to move my table, so there is that.

I hope you are doing well, you looked great at First Friday, Richard wants to email those photos to you too...so if you see an email from RichardM, that is who it is.

Hi!

I noticed your car was out of the parking lot, and thought maybe you took a little trip.

I sold 12 bags for 12, and a guy hit on me by asking to help me bring my stuff over to osl, then suggest we take a shower together, and he invited himself to couch surf in my apt. Wow! all this before i even knew his name. I think I delivered an effective NO. I don't get this approach at all.

I was in Portland Museum and they are charging $90 for a pouch like mine, only notebook size, with a chunky zipper made of canvas tarp material with paint and dirt splotches on it. $90!!!!!

It is supposed to be a tribute to Winslow Homer, I believe. The person that spends $90 on a simple, dirty bag is on drugs, and has enough money to buy the drugs and the snotty bag, several times over. Any way, it got me thinking, so I asked for the buyer of the museum store, and was asked to submit my product electronically.

I did that today, along with the buyer for Whole Foods. Both these places I feel I can mark my stuff up a little bit, because their clientele loves to spend more money. Also, it felt right for placement.

What is Lovell Designs?

I saw Miss Meca crossing the street yesterday and she looked vacant and lost.... Ted bought a bag to hold his cell phone. He looks uber-hip with a little xubrnt-kaizen.

Megan faxed my "reasonable accommodation" form to my Dr. Hoping I get the green light... Other than that, I think I found a person with a copy of os X to upgrade the software on my computer so I can upload a website, but I am still waiting on that...

Tell Richard to send the pic/s on over...

Can't wait to hear back from PMA or our local grocer, so I can plan my next move!

Happy dance on the pouch sales!  Ask for more next time for sure you deserve MORE if you sell on the 25th - for Congress Street art fair?

Yes, the museum and Whole Foods are perfect for your product placement needs.

There is a song by Edie Brickel and New Bohemians called "Little Miss S" that I think of whenever I see Miss MECA.

"Little Miss S, in her mini-dress, living it up to die, in a blink of the public eye"

Lovell Designs is a fine jewelry store in the Old Port.

Hope you have a good day, and congrats again on the success of your First Friday - your pouches are too cool and when i have money - hopefully this month - i shall buy one.

Hello Susan,

I have a new, cheery and bright product that I have designed and manufactured that is simple, yet original, for your museum store. It is made in the USA and made in Maine. The item shown is a split-key ring zippered bag, that works wonderfully with a black plastic carabineer that I have resourced, to attach to a backpack strap, inside a purse, and to a belt loop. It can conveniently carry credit cards, ID, chapstick, money, and receipts for a hands-free experience. Other sizes and options are under way.

Thank you for your consideration,

Angela Cook

p.s. The Xubrnt.com website is not online yet, however I do anticipate it within the month.

p.p.s. I have many years of experience sewing as a subcontractor of tents, tarps and backpacks. These items are built to last with heat sealed webbing and ribbon, the choice of fabric and thread, and manufacturing method. Each item comes with an informational hang tag and key to the design, as seen in the pictures below.

Subject: a very good race

Date: August 9, 2012 8:35:41 AM EDT

To: Nick Kline

Nick,

Do you want to have a hand in designing a race? I've been wanting to do one for years, inspired by the

http://auburnskiclub.com/nordic/summer-fun-runs/squaw-valley-mountain-run/

which is such a mental workout (not to stop) and the absurd muddy buddy where you trade off with your partner at mud obstacles to bike or run.

My motive is to use my new product as the rewards to entrants, and top-performers as a way to advertise the product. Income is also nice.

On the Squaw race: you run from the bottom of the mountain, 3.6 miles up to the top of the tram. With these views, there is a live band, refreshments, awards (a tall glass mug) and then a free tram ride down if you want. It is a challenging, fun, scenic day.

Thinking outside the box, I noticed online that Zombie races are really taking off (and minting someone a lot of money). What it involves is people signing up to be a runner or a chaser. The chaser gets paint and makeup applied before the race to look like a zombie. They try and catch the runner's flag. If the runner looses his flags, he is a zombie and can't win the race.

I have had a race idea in mind called The Very Good Race, not that I am stuck on it. I did note that VERY GOOD is very hard to get in a website domain as the Asians really like it!

Locally, and perhaps cost effectively, I did talk to the people at Wainright fields about a race a couple of years ago. They thought it was a natural place to hold a race. It is a mile radius of mowed grass, with a paved trail and dirt trail that runs about a mile out and back , off to the side of the grass radius. There are public restrooms. The public plays soccer and baseball games there. There is a tall concrete wall or 2. They have the little park gymnastic offerings as you go around the grass area.

Anyway, it i just an idea, and I thought if anyone could rock this idea it would be you. Also, to find a way to tie into your life so that you are getting something out of it.

My main motive is the advertising. It would be nice to not lose money per the product, but there is a gap between wholesale and retail price where I am not expecting all the money. I am flexible in general and understand the reality of not breaking even on the first event. I can cover the cost of the product per entrance without any expectation as my interest is also in the long view: I would like to see this grow annually in participants.

p.s. don't forget i have 4 adult ass hippity hops! (and these can be a challenge to compete on, as the horse can get infront of you, and then bounce you backwards ... participants would have to  be staggered )

Got this.  My initial reaction is that I spent two years doing race

organizing after I graduated form college and I kind of hate it... not

to say that there isn't money there because there may be...

My ideas were more centered around products and your ability to sew

and create cool ones.

One idea I had was for a line of LL Bean Tote style bags made out of

truckers tarp (aka Vinyl Coated Polyester) in various sizes and

colors.  Could be an interesting market with boaters and other rugged

water-resistant type users.

I did crappy job of hashing it out here: http://blogworldlive.com/

The general idea I had was I think what's worked for us so far is

where I'm doing marketing online, and you're doing product related

stuff.  I think that's where our talents lie.  It seems like you've

had some creative ideas there in the past - something I enjoy seeing

and giving input on just from a technical standpoint.  And I don't

have any particular direction here, but if we found a way to get that

going again in a way that was sustainable for both of us, we might end

up hitting on something with some legs.

Just thinking out loud.

A woman came thru line at Trader Joes with a tote bag made from trucker's vinyl. She got it in the Netherlands, and raved about it. She hadn't seen anything like it in the states. Of the things she raved about was its durability as she had it a long time, and it still looked like new.

What are the hazards or not so fun things about event organization?

trucker's tarp bags - very interesting.  I really like that idea.

Would require a little bit of design work but not too much, and some

material costs up front which I'd be the one fronting - but we'd have

to come up with a more detailed plan for selling them.  I'll do a

little more research on cost estimating and send it to you.  One thing

I know would help, but I'm not sure if you have any interest in doing

- is "direct marketing" - literally selling the stuff to local stores.

Then having the website to back it up - and eventually expanding to a

point where an email to a store in, say, Ohio, is going to generate a

sale because of a strong product and online presence.  And people are

seeing the bags being used, and heading online to find them.

Event organization:

takes a lot of local marketing with sponsors which I hate doing

takes a lot of work with the venue where the race is being held which

I hate doing

- local event permits and permissions

even insurance which i hate dealing with

planning out details of the experience - I've just done too much of it

in the past.

Marketing to people who actually want to do the race - going to other

races with flyers, etc, which again I've just done too much of to

enjoy.

Not to be cynical though - some people really like doing that kind of

stuff.  But, it's pretty different than what you've done in the past.

It's a skill you can easily pick up - but just one that - and don't

take this the wrong way - one that you don't have any current

experience with.  Again, not that it isn't easy to pick up - but it's

like learning something new, as opposed to continuing with something

that you're already really good at.  If it sounds appealing to you,

I'd say absolutely give it a try.

it would be cool to see if you can screen print on it to make an overall graphic design.

plastisol is what i use at the arm factor, and we purchased some additive so it would stick to nylon with extra-low heat curing (so the nylon doesn't shrink).

there is a swim suit place on woodfords corner. the guy that owns it, i think his name is joe, is crooked, but he does have a set up there as he prints on plastic swim caps, and you need a ventilation duct because it is toxic.

i wonder if vinyl coated poly is toxic, particularly when heated?

what i am working on right now is direct marketing.

I have found that most buyers of stores (Museums and Wholefoods) prefer you contact the buyer by email.

To get into Wholefoods you need to go thru your local store. If they pick you up, then you have access to their other stores.

I've been calling Museums today to ask for the store buyer contact / information.

oh angela.

i had no idea about the hippity hop...now that i know, it makes you even more awesome and i didn't think that was possabibble.

i suppose you haven't seen the episode of south park where randy rides around on his gigantic balls like a hippity hop?  yeah.  it's pretty funny.  i think he gave himself testicular cancer in that episode for some reason.

it is always a nice place to go, the Audubon, there are many woodchucks.  i sometimes wonder if we could eat them, and then i wonder if they think they could eat us.

i saw you working away in the work room tonight but i was with richard so i didn't stop in because he didn't want to that's why.  he can be a total poop sometimes.

the high heeled race and the hippity hop race are both good ideas for making money.  i would worry about liability if someone was to be hurt, because if it happened then what?  i mean that sucks but you have to figure in that someone might fall down and hit their head or something because people do that.  not you and me, but others.  i guess i might fall if i was running in high heels.

right now i am glad it is less than 80 degrees in my apartment unit.  and i suppose i can go to bed now because i brushed my teeth and washed my face.

Paul,

I am going to be on Congress St., probably near the Museum on this First Friday, test driving my little bag. It is a simple and original design ( i designed).  This is not the only item I intend to create with this embellishment.

Ideally, I would like to sell exclusively to Zappos as they have a wide net of customers. Should this have an indication of being popular and feasible, I would like to do a marketing clip for Zappos, Zappos style. I thought it would be a funny approach to market my product to them, and maybe they would use it to market on the site.

If you are out an about, come take a loook!

Hi Angela-

He has a floorless half pyramid tent I made and wants to add some mosquito netting around the bottom

and behind the door. I offered to add the netting around the bottom for about $80, but haven't ever done the

door netting. Just thought if he was in the area he might be able to show you and figure out a good way to

do it. I have netting and zipper I could send with a bivy order if you think you want to modify his tent for him.

You will be in the shop on Monday? with Sue? It would be great to see what she is doing.

last night,  andy gave me one of his over the counter sleep aid - and i totally slept. it helps me see that those pills make me feel really groggy when i get up, even after 8 hours of sleep. Nonetheless, I had solid, full sleep.

I had weird dreams, too. several, like people exiting from my life.

i listened to your downloads today. deep sleep in the middle of the day. arose rejuvenated and Ready To Go!  feeling a little confident and unstoppable (!)

a friend called while i was laying down, and she had a tip that a  cheese place in the public market (a few blocks from where i live in the business district) had an sign for hiring. i walked down right away, spotted one person among 4 to talk to, and it was the owner. I came back with a resume. (it is busy at lunch / and so was she).  it is organic, artisanal cheese. full or part time. we'll see...

plus, completed sewing for dave from california ( i used to subcontract from him when i lived in nv) and made $100.

Well, well, dear friend! I am sorry to see you go, however it is a brave and thought-filled move. You will be just fine. Trader Joe's is a real mix of stuff. So lovely on one hand and so fked up in a bunch of other ways.... AM is definitely more out of control these days and my guess is she feels her power threatened with the removal of her position in 'bread'. Grabbing for any sense of power and control, wherever she can, to recreate her sense of self. Poor, silly girl. I will back you up on this behavior if I can create that opportunity. All that heard of your possible departure were disheartened. Everyone liked working with you and saw you as a "strong team player." I really don't know what Libbi's m.o. is. I just don't know her well enough. For your sake I am glad you are moving forward totally independent of corporate america. For my sake, a significant amount of pure fun, creativity and silliness is going to go unmatched. Big hugs, love, and prosperity, my friend. The door is open. hey! jo-ho!

i think anna maria is the one that kept taking down my table picture/promo. this sort of nonsense complaining about me not hearing her instruction about bread, the cold shoulder that i didn't make her feel important for being an obstacle to doing my work, and looking back....

in the cold shoulder face, she was in bread an i was in deli. my next door neighbor who is a gay man was talking to me, and a/m, i think she was a little jealous of the attention. like i said, he is gay, and a fine human being.

then, looking back, when the store first opened, kevin from the gym stopped to say hi to me on reg. a/m was on reg too and tried to have a long distance conversation with him because they had worked together somewhere else, however kev preferred talking to me. i could see her trying to size up the information, but i didn't think anything of it. it was in the very beginning, and kev in my friend.

i think she is conniving drama queen and very fucking insecure. she has a boyfriend.

now that i think about it, my postcard on my locker that read: being ugly, stupid, and weak is not the solution --- she probably thought it pertained to her.

i put it up after libbi stomped off when i accepted her compliment. it was my way of communicating that i don't give a fuck about trying to fit in or what you think of me anymore.

I got your card as I was leaving for work tonight, Saturday. I was happy to see this e-mail as well. I couldn't open the first photo but was able to open the other two. I love it.

The card is excellent and the graphics and photo of you look great. You did a wonderful job on the "change purses". The Kaizen look well thought out, meaningful, and very marketable. No surprise you have been quite busy.

Yes, I will seek you out on Friday, if not sooner.

The pod on that card came from someone I worked with and I am sooo glad I took a photo of it when she gave it to me.

It was green and I have a color shot of it too but I like the b/w one best.

I did go to the Audubon today to read underneath my favorite tree for a while so I count this as a good day.

hello, hello,

i think what i love most about your cookies, besides the crunchy flavor, is oatmeal reminds me of my dad, and these cookies would definitely be dad-approved!

i'm glad you made it to the audubon. i would love to go with you sometime, maybe bring a sketchbook and start enjoying the process of describing nature.

the pod is such a perfect little orb.

umm, segue:

another one of my ideas is an adult (ass) hippity hop race, and i was thinking prizes could be by artists, plus have artist/ craft vendors to make a day of the first and only hippity hop world championships.

all i know is that in my demo of the adult (ass) hippity, is that if you get competitive,  the ball can get in front of you, and bounce you back instead of forward. that may hurt the person behind you in a race situation... maybe i need to test this idea with more people.

a hippity hop is what i am carrying on the kaizen card. kids bounce on them, but you can get adult (ass) one's online, too!  and watch adults squishing them to gigantic proportions when they bounce. i bought four, jest because ...

maybe we could bounce thru the audubon (that is putting a smile on your face, right?)!
