Hey D!

I may see you Friday night or Sat.

I get to meet with the person who is helping me on my wood working project at his shop on Friday, and get cranking on my table again, and start ideating my other projects. (He has no idea!  Well, maybe a little ... He is trained in traditional furniture making and craftsmanship, and I am absolutely not! I just draw boomerangs and ask him how we are going to turn them into table legs... I think he likes the fresh challenge, as wayward as it is :)

... So, he has an inclination of what to expect from me, and that is nothing traditional, or traditional with a wicked twist!

Greetings Megan,

I hope you are enjoying this fine day, I met with Ben today. He took pictures of my interior and would like to take pics other's as well, to see how we are occupying the space. We talked the background of building this building, the ideas for the future with the gallery as a public / community space, and I interviewed him so that I have things to share in the next newsletter.

He explained to me how the air circulates and reheats in this building, and the other green considerations, which I also thought was interesting to share in the newsletter.

What do you think of doing fruit smoothies for the counsel meeting? I have the awesome blender, and I could get ingredients to feed plenty of people for $10.

talk soon,

Next for me is the t for my brother. Do you think you will have any time Th or F of the 17/18 or 24/25 or 31/1 to schedule me to print?

Thanks,

Hello Rick (and Linda:),

I have Th and F available this week (17th and 18th) and next week ( 24th and 25th) and Friday of June 1st.

There is going to be a grand opening for this building I live in, and it is still being discussed, but the gallerist for First Friday may be an all-resident show vs just one artist.

If that is the case, I would love to show the boomerang table.

I'll see you Monday at Rockler to talk wood and shop and such. Maybe I can pretend to be a know-it-all dummy customer, just for kicks.

Talk soon,

Chris,

We had a resident meeting today, and the architect, Ben Walter, was there. He likes to play guitar, and his office is around the corner on Cumberland and High Street. He works next to a very well known master engineer.

Ben asked about you, because of your interest in music. He also wants to see your apartment to see how you set it up and are using it.

I am just passing along information. If you want to contact him, he may be a good resource for you, your work at Portland Downtown Arts...

His email is:

Hello Megan

Monday I go to work at 430 pm. Can you let me know if you would like to get items for smoothies while I am at work, or if you would? I have plenty of 4oz waxed paper cups (they don't leak). Ben Walter, the architect expressed an interest in attending the meeting. I let him know the time and place.

I was thinking, if June 1st is the grand opening, maybe Avesta would like to showcase an all- residents show.

Beyond that, it is getting towards the middle of the month, and I need pertinent info for the June newsletter -- which also includes the June Gallerist/s.

Is there anything that you, et al, want me to put in the newsletter from Avesta / Loft point of view?

See you Tuesday, at the very latest,

Angela

Hey Angela,

I am not sure it is appropriate for Ben to attend the first meeting. This meeting is really geared towards residents and maybe we should see if others want to add him to a future meetings agenda.

I will pick up the smoothie items tomorrow. Shall I grab some of the ingredients you suggested in your previous email? Could you remind me what they were again? We are not allowed to reimburse residents and I think it is only right that Avesta pays for the first meetings goodies; therefore, I will just get them :) I really appreciate the offer though. We can discuss what everyone wants to do for food, moving forward, at our meeting tomorrow.

June already has a resident showcasing her work so we can't do an all-residents show. We were going to discuss hanging other artists work up around the building (in hallways), and we can talk about this tomorrow too.

I will check with Hollie and Cheryl to see if we should add anything to the newsletter. I will also check with June artist to make sure she wants to be featured in the newsletter (I don't see why not, but want to verify).

Thanks for all of your assistance.

Sincerely,

Can you bring frozen fruit, a base such as coconut milk or orange juice to my apartment by 8:45 am tomorrow, and I'll turn it into a smoothie.

Ben has asked several times about the meeting. I sent you an email as per our discussion a few weeks ago. He said he would stop by if he had the time. It has been interesting to visit with him and learn the vision and backstory for the development for this place. I understand he has been communicating with Hollie and Cheryl about the grand opening. That's all I know.

Will head out around 8:15 to grab the ingredients tomorrow morning and bring them to your apartment before or at 8:45am.

I guess Hollie has spoken to Ben and if he comes, he wants to be an observer. We just want to make sure all of the residents feel comfortable with this moving forward...and if he wants to be an agenda item in the future, we can see how everyone feels about that as well (maybe others have an interest in asking him questions? I don't know). It is really up to everyone at the Resident meeting and that we just make sure all are feeling OK with that. Thanks so much and I will see you tomorrow!

Megan,

I was looking at some of the links Ben sent me, when ideating the existence of this building and the purpose... It may be kind of cool to have an inner-residence -- not so much competition, but goal... Like I saw on one link to an art/residence building, that they had 30 8x10 pics in 30 days.

This can be inner residence on our hallways, or a show item. What I like about the "challenge" is that it engages (you/me). It is part of why I take classes, in a sense, to be made to do an assignment. Plus, viewing other people's work and how they solve problems and their style helps me understand my own expression better.

Just an idea.

An Open Letter to Avesta and Ben Walter / CWS Architect

Regarding Oak Street Lofts

Thank you very much for the ingenious and facile use and utilization of 400 sqf of living space. I have liberated my library of books from a friends basement now showcased on the studio ledges, many mediums of art supplies, sundry hobbies and cooking supplies, and plenty of operable project and living space. And, let's not forget, a room with a view with natural light, and darkness if desired.

I am looking forward to using the community workspace, now that I am completely moved in, so that I can start to gain traction in my creative endeavors.

Most importantly, it occurs to me, that quite naturally this new building you have designed and built, has character. I wanted to compliment you on this, as I do not think it is necessarily easy to imbue a new space with a feeling of legit presence and purpose, like it has always belonged, and congenially so.

The little things like green eco-considerations in building materials and process (solar panels, and dedicated waste and recycling, fresh air circulation), and gallery space for show and venues, add to the well-rounded and thoughtful holistic spirit. I enjoy living in a building that is representative of the practical, informed, creative zeitgeist of its community and times, and let's not forget smart!

A special thanks to Avesta for their fine communication and management abilities. This is an enjoyable, secure, dynamic place to live, full of possibility and opportunity.

Dig it!

Modern architecture

Written by Cliff Gallant

Walked by a new house under construction pretty regularly for a couple of weeks and enjoyed kind of casually watching it come together. I could easily have asked one of the people on the job what style it was going to be, but decided that it would be more fun not knowing.

The neighborhood is made up of small-sized three-story wooden apartment buildings that have that sunk into the earth lived-in look about them, like they've been home to many different people for a real long time and have stories to tell. In short, the neighborhood has character. There's a real Portland feeling to it. So what the house was going to look like would mean something, and I was very interested in watching it take shape.

After about two weeks the interior framework seemed to be done and I watched anxiously for the first signs of what the exterior would be. A flat featureless plywood-looking shell that seemed to be the support for the exterior was added and the anticipation grew.

The next time I happened by, though, I was surprised to see that the flat featureless shell had been painted white and most of the crew had dispersed. There were just two workers left and they were spreading loam for the lawn. Even I know that the lawn is the last thing to be added so I asked the workers what was up. They responded that the tenants would be moving in soon, that the place was done.

Done. As in ready for occupancy. No rich looking wood shingles. No brick. No masonry. No decorative anything. Done. Done as it sits, just waiting for the grass to grow.

They can't be serious, I thought. But they were. A few days later I saw a nice young family moving in. I was dumbfounded and needed a reality check so I asked a woman out raking leaves at another house how she felt about the new house. She wouldn't say much, just kept her head down raking and said that all the neighbors have sort of quietly agreed not to talk about the situation. After all, she said, the building would soon be home to three families. She said it in a sympathetic way, as if not talking about the obvious was the decent thing to do.

How do these builders get away with it?

The same thing is happening downtown too. Look at the building that went up not long ago at 490-492 Congress Street, across from the Longfellow House. The one with the large, battleship grey metallic plates overlaid like shingles all over the front. Looks like Darth Vader's headquarters. Across from the first brick house built on the peninsula and wedged between two stately brick buildings. I discussed the design with a knowledgeable friend and she said that it brings to mind what was once known as the School of Brutalism in architecture, whereby buildings were constructed without regard for their social, historical or architectural environment. Of course no one openly associates themselves with the school of thought anymore, she said, but its influences are still being felt.

There's also the new building at 72 Oak Street, called the Oak Street Lofts. It's as if there was a conscious effort to make the place look uninteresting. Instantly forgettable. Dullness raised to an art form. What an irony that the place offers subsidized housing to artists.

In all fairness, though, the same kind of deprecating remarks were made about the Portland Museum of Art when it was built in the early eighties. No character, people said. Bland. Ugly. Featureless. But one doesn't hear that kind of thing much anymore. The building has grown on us. At the time the architects said it was designed as it was so as to not overshadow other buildings in the area and that the design places the emphasis on what goes on inside the building, not on what the outside looks like. The building was designed in such a way as to not compete with the art contained inside, they said. People scoffed but over time what the architects said has proven to be valid. When you look at the building you don't think about the building, you think about what's inside.

The same might be said in defense of the Oak Street Lofts, actually. The building is incredibly boring from a distance but get up close and you see that the ground floor is nicely glassed in and that there is an exceptionally good group art show going on in the foyer. You can get a very good view of the work from the street and one gets the impression that the show is a reflection of the positive vibes going on in the building. And it's also true that the apartments up over the storefronts at 490-492 Congress look very inviting with their glassed-in fronts from floor to ceiling. I'll bet the view of the western mountains from the top floors is terrific.

So, is that the future of a city known for its fine architecture? Present a featureless face to the world and let the story of the building be what goes on inside? Or, in the end, is that just a sophisticated justification for avoiding the cost and effort of constructing buildings that are aesthetically appealing?

Whatever the case might be, the same company, Avesta, that is responsible for the Oak Street Lofts project is about to make its mark, big time, on Munjoy Hill, at the site of the former Adams School. If the Oak Street Lofts project is any indication, the neighborhood is in for a rude shock. Avesta is also the same company that foisted the cookie-cutter housing on Bayside a few years ago.

These people care about the bottom line and nothing else. Through their machinations over time they have managed to sidestep local residents' input relative to the Adams School project, and once they were confident that they had the contract they began to backpeddle from the original proposal. Instead of what's called hardy plank, which is an attractive concrete composite, we're going to be looking at vinyl siding, which is less costly. And, in case one is harkening to the "what matters is what goes on inside" school of thought, it might be worth noting that they've also managed to get granite counter tops downgraded to formica, and instead of hardwood floors they'll be installing vinyl flooring, whatever that is. Get it done, get the people in, and so what if it looks like crap and all falls apart in a few years. By then Avesta will be long gone.

Remember what I said about how I thought it would be fun not knowing what was coming and just watching the new house take shape? I found out that that approach is not the one to take. If you're concerned about what's going on with the Adams School project, for instance, call Avesta and ask when they're going to be holding neighborhood meetings because you want to go. These companies rely heavily on people's tendency to wait and see what takes shape.

Hello Meghan,

Good Job Today!

I talked to Ted on the 4th floor, he forgot about the meeting, and Chris on the 4th floor thought it was for next week. He was bummed he missed it.

We can generate interest ... and reminders!

Can you have the June artist contact me:

Angela #406

xubrnt@mac.com

I am not opposed to an artist writing their own bio/description - I mean, that is an option, too, if they prefer it. It seems like a boon to have in-house editorial for a gallery show, at the very least.

If you want to show an apt on the 4th floor, you are welcome to show my apt as well on grand opening.

What is the agenda for grand opening so I can put a play by play in the newsletter?

If there are going to be musicians, etc, I would be happy to mention them in the newsletter, too.

I am going to send you artwork for a poster / postcard for residence to announce the opportunity to hang their artwork in the hallways for grand opening. Is there anything specific you want to say? I am hoping to have this to you in a few days so that people can have a little time to prepare.

I can also ask for submissions for the sandwich board idea and ribbon cutting... and when would be a good time to meet... artsy entry ideas...

I can make a mention of the blackstone classes in the newsletter, or are you satisfied with Tanya and the collage?

I offered to assist Tanya (if I am not working), and perhaps we could make it mixed media: collage, acrylic paint, water color, pastel ...

In the newsletter, I will follow up with todays meeting by informing about the computer in the community room, bulletin board and calendar for the community room and gallery, the possibility of curating a show.

newsletter contributor deadlines... a work bench in the garage ... the new fridge in the gallery...

sound good?

I will pass along the message that you are willing to show off your apartment! Thanks.

I would email Cheryl to get the agenda regarding the Grand Opening. As of now, I have no details or information for you to add to the newsletter. As I hear more info, I will let you know. Cheryl, however, may know more then I do!

Nothing specific we want to say about residents hanging artwork in hallway, they just need to fill out the Exhibition Agreement and Application if they are interested.

It would be great if you could mention the Blackstone art project...maybe this could occur at more then just this complex if other residents are interested in helping out!

I think all sounds good. Did I forget anything?

Thanks,

Hey Megan,

Do we need to fill out an exhibition application for outside our door? Does this mean we need to rotate? I have been under the impression that it is our personalized space per entrance.

I'm expecting my boomerang table to be completed, and it will be outside my door, and it won't be hung.

My initial response is, it seems complicated to access your own artwork and too much trouble to bother to fill out an application per art piece, when it has no rotation schedule and is for my own pleasure.

If this public hallway space is not free to personalize per apartment zone, please let me know, and I will keep all my art inside, and put my time and energy into avenues that understand engagement, and are reciprocative.

Is there any way to loosen the consistency of the plastisol so that I can paint with it, and then cure it through the dryer?

I am thinking of "painting" in large, free hand brush on sheer organza, in either nylon, polyester or silk. This can be done on a horizontal surface aka table, and I can put something underneath it to absorb the ink, so as not to make the table messy.

Hello Bill,

This is Angela from Trader Joes. I want to talk with you about web design / hosting possibilities and opportunities. June 1st is the grand opening,  starting around 3pm, then going into First Friday art walk. Perhaps you would like to see the place, take a tour, see my place (Amy & Venice, too), a talk a wee bit of business.

At Oak Street Lofts I have volunteered to publish a monthly newsletter  in an effort to be a dynamic artist association, with use of the gallery. etc.

Additionally, after looking at other artist/resident/galleries online, I want to take ownership of a community website. I haven't fleshed out the idea, except that I feel it is integral for the artist/residence to lead the way, and not the housing/management, as these are 2 separate factions with 2 separate protocols.

I am thinking of getting these 4 websites, however only using one: www.72oakstreet.com , .org , oakstreetlofts.com, .org.

A website can be made with iweb on my mac, for user friendly templates. I have adobe illustrator / photoshop to create my own graphics/images.

Ideally it is to host the monthly newsletter, calendar for the gallery and community room, inter-residence challenges (like 30 8x10 art in 30 days), a page per residence that can link to their own website ...

Can we discuss ways for me to solicit advertising, etc, so that the website can pay for itself? I would like to be able to update it and manicure it myself.

Pretty soon, I will need to build my own artist website, with items to sell. I was thinking of big cartel for the shopping cart.

I am sure you have sufficient ideas and resources to round out my initial gestures and meandering.

Has Amy made you a Summer suit and tie yet?

Great to hear from you. How did your trip go in Utah?

I've been doubling up on both my days off to go to a woodworking shop and B&B an hour from here. My boomerang table is nearly finished. I will run the B&B and work in the wood shop while the owners are away in June. I will feed the chickens, gather the eggs, make breakfasts, pet the cat, and watch the sheep chew their cud. Hello,

I got your message. I hope you are enjoying your vacation. Has Shannon returned to London?

The last 2 weeks, on my days off, I have spent at the wood working shop, and stayed the night at the B&B. I will run the B&B, and take time off of work, June 8-18th. It is in the country, most of Maine is, and I will feed the chickens and collect eggs, make breakfast, and stare at sheep chewing their cud. I can also kayak on the lake, and work in the wood shop.

I am planning on making a large chop block for my apartment, and it sounds as if the guy at work would like one, too.

I'm busy on one hand, and waiting for my next pay check on  the other. The table looks great! And I am at the point where I have finish sanded and am applying one oil coat after another, which is really making the mahogany coppery with highlights. Needless to say, it is exciting to see it finished, and a bit triumphant to have it completed, considering its meandering course, and starts and stops.

Hello,

I have not heard back from Megan regarding the table I will have completed by grand opening, and wish to place outside my apartment. I was told that I would have to fill out an application. This table will not be hung on the wall and is not on the rotation schedule. I was under the assumption this was my personal space, to personalize.

I asked Megan for clarity on this which I have not received.

I offered to do a postcard immediately after the resident meeting, so residents could know to hang their art for grand opening. I have received no direction and residents are none the wiser.

In light of this first negligence, July may be a better grand opening date.

As it is, I am not doing the newsletter for June, as I am not volunteering my efforts to work against myself, ie the communication gap referencing putting a table on view for the grand opening in the hallway, without an application. Additionally, I had offered my apartment to show in the tour. I am rescinding that offer.

I will let the residents know why i am not doing the newsletter.

Cheryl,

I am not going to the wood shop today as planned, therefore I am around, doing r & d, and getting materials. I am not available tomorrow.

For me, either the hallway is interactive area or it is not. If it is not, there is no reason to take any art-related conversations seriously here. I will communicate my short stay on the newsletter to the tenants. It is not my inclination to be negligent or irresponsible or withholding.

By the way, it is a huge oversight not to invite the residents to their own party, I mean, with participation. This is a courtesy letter, in light of that silent boot in the ass.

Why have the residents been overlooked to participate in their own party?

I don't think any one will want to attend a resident council meeting if they understand how titular their contribution is viewed by management.

Hello Angela,

I am sorry you feel this way. I was not neglecting to answer your questions, I had passed your email along to Cheryl so she could respond. I should have sent you a quick email to let you know I had done this and I apologize for not doing so. I am not property management, so I really don't have the answers to a lot of questions regarding what can or cannot be placed outside of an apartment. Cheryl had every intent to get back to you and let you know Avesta's stance on your question.

If you no longer want to do the newsletter, I understand and I will take it over. I will offer up the opportunity for others to take it over at our next Resident Council Meeting.

I know Cheryl sent you an email asking for us all to meet, which I think is a good idea. Hopefully you have time in the near future to sit down with us and talk, as we value all of your efforts and want to make sure this is resolved.

I met with Megan and Cheryl

We have agreed to one baseline agreement to be signed that meets Avesta's stipulation for safety and nondiscrimination / non-offensiveness for people to put their art in the hallway, instead of an application for every item every time.

Also, they will be putting up hangers in the hallway so that residents can put up their art for grand opening.

It was a workable meeting. I understood their property management position and legalities better, and hopefully they understood mine, that the reason I do art is to not have a full plate of bureaucracy.

Hello Megan,

I got the first newsletter. I think this communique will be more cohesive and compelling if we change the dynamic, meaning that it isn't coming from outside the tenants, but within. I also think we the tenants would benefit from interviews with Avesta employees. I think this will deepen working relationships and relatedness across the board.

I think there is a way to get a greater response to the gallery events/ artist and resident meetings by targeting a background of relatedness. I think this can be accomplished with a newsletter coming from within, ie by tenant to tenants and associations.

I would be happy to work with you and take this on. I am also happy for someone else to take the reigns, if they so desire. For instance, in each newsletter:

- interviewing a tenant a month to establish a background of relatedness, with picture

-posting the date for a low-key but concerted potluck and residential meeting. (perhaps these can casually coincide with pointers to discuss in person at the time, and written copies to hand out). It may be useful to ask for people to rsvp, and with an item they may like to bring, or suggest items to bring.

-list topics of concern and to be discussed at the meeting, or to voice opinion to you, et al, via email, etc.

-announce the next gallerist (and beyond)

-feedback, followup to events, policies, etc.

-determine and announce the next residential meeting and potluck theme (and assignments)

I just see this as the opportunity for communication and meeting as a potent form of action.

Lastly, I am sorry I used "I" a lot, in these paragraphs. Not very good editing, however, (i'm) hoping you understand the facile context.

Talk soon, Megan,

Hello Cheryl,

I just ran into a person with a wee dog at the elevator. She entered thru the parking lot access, and walked into the building, where she met a man at the elevator.

Having put my dog down within the year, there is a big hole where my running buddy used to be, so I notice such things, as with the building policy (no dogs in the building) per the contract I signed.

I thought you may like to know the going-ons today, and perhaps check with you as to the possibility of a dog as a "service" pet, at a later fiscally-prepared time.

Hi Angela-

Thanks for letting me know. I can assure you that the pet policy is being followed.

In terms of having a dog as a service animal, this would be a request for a reasonable accommodation. This involves paperwork being completed and a doctor would need to sign a document stating that you have a medical condition for which it is necessary for you to have the pet.

Hello Rick,

Due to a confluence of using my purchasing power to acquire a cushy area rug, and the convergence of dental and car insurance in my near future, what will work best for me is meeting with you

Friday, May 4th.

We can work on the boomerang table, and perhaps get the lay of the land for the next projects...

I will also be available May 10, 11, and 12th.  It may be possible to stay over, if you do not have B & B guests, or I do have a large dome tent, which may be fun to use, if you thought it was appropriate to pitch it on your property.

What I would like to do is get some orientation on projects that I can work on in conjunction with house sitting, if that works for you. It would be like a vacation from retail work, with the opportunity to immerse myself  in my personal projects.

I hope everything is going well for you and Linda, et al.

This is what I have so far for the newsletter.

These are the column sections

In View = gallery artist coverage

Community Connection = community connection point of interest

Sight lines and Shorts = welcome/greeting, news to be addressed at ircm (informal resident council meeting) and shared.

meet your neighbor= an interview

awam = a word a month

looking in = cheryl, et al,  can say something here ...

looking out = contact info for avesta associates and maintenance etc.

I have used the shape of the windows on the Lofts to create the sections of the columns: a fat window shape in the middle to hold copy, and small and large rectangles on either side, plus a small window shape on the back / 2 rectangles.  i can show you when I print a draft.

Can you ask Cheryl for her input, then I will print a rough draft for you all.

Also,

How would you like the contact info on the newsletter to read?

I don't know if i would call myself "a sage"

I would clean up the last phrase of the first paragraph. i would say something like

"Concerned over the cost's and benefits of education, in comparison to the riskiness of the job market, Chris seeks alternative methods of education that is comparable to societal requisites, that does not assume quite as much financial risk."

Also SXSW is not a Venue, it's a festival.

Styxx has 2 x's, and you can type "LOVESICK" in all caps.

Hope that wasn't too picky. Thank you so much, its a great write up!

I don't know if I am going to be able to reword the education-cost-benefits in that space. For your age, you certainly seem wise to me! I think you are sage for your time-space continuum. You are not going back, nor are you going falsely forward, and you have more in your awareness and observation than most.

How about I exchange "a sage" for "wise," and let me work on the ed-cost-benefit sentence. I'll change the other edits re festival, caps...

I have finished my classes, got organized, filed my IRS (why only $29 return? -- it used to be such a workable amount!) -- and found myself with a little free time, not knowing what to do with myself.

You must see my new area rug! It pulls the apartment together nicely.

Are you enjoying your new space? It is definitely a substantial upgrade, and a delight to come home too. It makes me feel less of the destitution of Maine that I have rubbed shoulders with, just a 1/4 mile away on Congress St, and more sublime relief.

My woven labels will be coming soon and I can start making prototypes of items to market. I'm still leaving the abode in barely enough time to get to work!  (Such is its pull).

Enjoy your time at the B&B. The lovely weather is coming, and here to stay!

Megan,

I'll see you tm, but I had a thought today, per the meeting.

I was thinking, it might be nice to be a little pro-active, in a nice way, to keep everyone on line with things you/Avesta would like them to be mindful of.

It occurred to me, the circulating air is a neat thing, as rooms shouldn't get stuff and toxic that way, but it will be important to remember, and perhaps with repetition, that the air in your apartment effects others. A reminder may help defer potential hazards. The circulation in this building, I imagine, is not like most buildings in that it is inhaling and exhaling, as with ourselves.

I was thinking it may be nice to do a community newsletter, written by the occupant/s. This could be a person, or several, and it could be rotated.

Just an idea, to get the message across with the convivial community orientation.

P.S. It really bothers me to see cig packs and bike lock packaging littered in the parking area. To me, it is showing a lack of pride and respect for this place (already!)

A community letter by community members might buoy the spirit of those that are a little lackluster. Perhaps give each resident the opportunity to pen it monthly, or bi-monthly.

Yes, this sounds like fun. Do you know Ingrid's apartment #? Maybe I can get a pic of her work on the postcard.

Perhaps we can get everyone up to speed via the internet with an email newsletter, or like a work space / calendar blog for the locals. I haven't looked into it, but I think you can get dedicated virtual space for your project and connections.

This may be a way to stay connected, communicate, in a modern fashion.  Less paper waste, etc, but hopefully not less personal.

Ideas ...

As to times and dates, I haven't a clue of other peoples schedule except those around me, which seem to be opposite mine.

Is there a place to put a newsletter locally, like near the elevator, or in the elevator? Something like a community hub... In the trash room, may be an idea, because residents will probably visit that once a week.

Perhaps as a start, solicit internet community connectivity at one of these spots. Send out newsletters via the internet and posted at a hub location.

A blog may allow people to log on with their thoughts to shape the community projects. One on one is always nice, too, to see people face to face, however the options (virtual and in person) may cover the basis better.

Let me know how I can help.

I think it would be a great idea to move forward with your newsletter suggestion in the near future! Would you like me to send out postcards to all of the residents for our first unofficial 'resident council' meeting? During this meeting we can discuss the idea of a newsletter and whatever other topics people have in mind? If so, what times/dates do you think will work best for residents? Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks,

Hello,

For this postcard, what is the intention of the communication? I can work on the layout, and if you want to have Ingrid contact me, perhaps we can personalize it, or figure something out.

I like the idea of using the  gallery area as a place to put newsletters, and to act as a physical hub and network. I'll look into online project sites, just as another way to reinforce communication of pertinent info.

One caution would be listing sensitive information that an outsider could use. A calendar of events, or reminders, or monthly newsletter posting. I'm not sure where to draw the line of too much info.

Do you want these postcards printed at Kinkos, or other, and how many?

Unfortunately, I cannot give other residents apartment #'s away to anyone! Sorry! I have a meeting with her this morning if you would like me to mention this to her? That way, we can get a postcard out to everyone this week. I think coming up with a 'community hub' is a good idea...we could place the newsletters in the gallery area too as there are comfy seats to sit and read/hang out. A blog is a good idea, we would just need to make sure Avesta can monitor it somehow...because we can't have inappropriate discussions on the blog. I think all of these things will be great to discuss at an informal resident council meeting, don't you? I look forward to getting this started and appreciate your assistance :)

Sorry for my seriously delayed response...this week has been a little crazy! The postcard is to let people know that we want to start a resident council and it will describe when/where our first meeting will be. Have you been able to see/contact Ingrid? Will you be at First Friday tomorrow? Maybe we can connect then?

I think we could just print the postcards here, at Avesta...but I can always see if we can get them done at Kinkos instead. We would need 21 postcards (just enough for all of the occupied units)...

Hi A,

No I didn't go, I was tired. I also wanted company particularly going my first time.

Yes I would love to try again. I definitely want to dance.

I am working Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues 9:30p-8:30a this week. Sunday I am planning on going to First Parish church at 10:00am after work and then doing laundry and topping it off with some sleep. Life can't get more exciting!

I was surprised to hear that TD was closed on Sunday, until I heard that it was a state  or city requirement.

It was great to see you. You looked fabulous.

Re Saturn: It feels like I have been waiting all my life, or how I have waited in the past, and I'm getting so tired of it. I also feel strong tendencies to get a place where I can have a dog. The fact of the matter is, this place is really great re the price, location, and quality.  I feel I am reaching for something, in my circumstance, which doesn't make it feel quite right, like I would like a dog, but I also think, it may be just waiting for my wee pay check so I can do something, too. I think I am trying to find fault, just because I have a lot of time on my hands.

Perhaps even more than that.  Remember the Libra thing about having an image in your mind of what everything in your life should be like, look like, etc.  Job, home, spouse, significant other, you, car, everything.  And when something doesn’t quite fit the image in your head, it nigs at you constantly and you will try to change or manipulate it into being in tune with the image.  We can talk about it during our conversation as well.

yeah, the libra thing is niggling.

easter sunday the store was closed. the forecast was for rain. i wanted to go for a long rollerblade outing. i sat the whole day inside my 8 x9' window, looking out on a beautiful day, that didn't rain!

it reminds me of the last holiday i sat out, and inactivity just rolls into more lethargy. so, i have been lethargic.

i feel like the inner critic is punting my ass constantly, for being such a time waster. i feel like i am in a vortex and i don't know how to reclaim myself: i have become the perfect retail employee, functioning to serve other people's whims, and i actually have to talk myself down out of doing something stupid at work that would get me fired.

not that work is unpleasant or not fun, just that i am getting upset at myself on the inside, and more than a little angry because there is plenty i can do with my time that doesn't need money but i have lost the ability to make me do so. last night i ate 2 frozen desserts with icecream. again, this is not what i would intend with my free time, but there. went to sleep. wake up to the same creepy lethargic day.

when i do an honest assessment of my finances, i am soluble for paying my rent, and insurance and my dentist appointment, and food, but it leaves little else for 4 weeks. I heard back from Rick about wood shop dates, and I may have to put that off for a month. I have the time, not the money to go there and back. It fatigues me to think about, and reminds me of old-hat, all my life i seem to be always waiting. (perhaps the libra thing?!)

then I start to think about maine as so unsophisticated. I don't have to put any of this into words, just flip thru the umpteen images in my head, and I start questioning my whole life and become very dissatisfied with where i am, and the fact there is no dog in my life. but i question, if i am financially where i need to be to properly take care of a dog.

my little entrepreneurial idea is ready to go into production, except i need to order #3 zipper and zip pulls.  I have #5, and it makes a choppy prototype. I need to order these items on a roll and in bulk plus shipping. So, production has stalled until I feel I can afford these items and i stare at the project spread out on my floor and just try to forget about it by napping.

somewhere in there is a fear of exposing myself. once it comes time to have a product and market it. i "feel" a little lackluster about that because, i don't know. it brings back an old fear, of being seen. And, the thoughts come up of you saying that i don't want to see myself, and i think you may be right.

there was a application circulated for the gallery space downstairs. it bummed me out right away. i am not motivated to show little arts and crafts work. i want to move people and leave foot prints however, i dont think i want to be exposed locally. there is a huge chasm between where i am and where i want to be. the libra picture thingy, no doubt. i just haven't dug in with what i've got and started working it.

i don't know what i am waiting for. My life doesn't require much of me, as it is. I no longer have a pet that needs to be processed daily with its needs. My billing is automatically deducted from my bank account. My income is automatically deposited. I have books that line the wall, that I stare at the titles like a mosaic. in all this doing-nothingness, and ideation of doingness, i don't feel i have energy for it "all." i have a serious case of ennui in there somewhere.

Hello Megan,

With Chris and Ingrid, I have given them a copy of my rough draft, and they have supplied me with edit and revision. So, the pdf I sent you is the rough, and I will provide the final.

Did Cheryl want to add something? I have room on the back, in a window pane shape.

This will be my protocol, to give a rough draft to whomever is interviewed.  I met with Ingrid today. She feels vulnerable as an artist for people to know why the swan is lame, or basically anything about her.

I expressed that it is brave to be vunerable, and make this personal connection with her art and people. There is no way to avoid that as an artist. However, I am glad I took this time to get feed back because people are sensitive about what is put into the written word.

This is an opportunity for Ingrid to step out of her shell, and feel supported by the community she lives. We are all in the same boat...

Any thoughts? Looking good?

If you would like to get copies for each apartment or have extra in the lobby, I would be happy to get them and distribute.

Kinkos is .11 a copy plus tax, for reference. They may be cheaper if you do it yourself, which I can do with one hard copy, which I have on hand.

Hi Megan,

I ran off to work this afternoon. My computer wasn't registering that it sent you an email, so I left a hard copy at Avesta.

Hello,

I finished the newsletter. It has helped me see myself as an artist, and realize similarities vs thinking I am singular in my circumstance / desire / ambition.

The woman I interviewed for the Gallery show wanted to be a dancer but her mother couldn't afford lessons. I was told "we" couldn't afford lessons as well.

As I was older, I visited my Dad, and looked at old photographs, of my older sister, starting out fresh when the family was new ... she had dance lessons galore, and outfits, and professional photo shoots.

I think not having enough money is code for something deeper. As my dad said, no amount of money would be enough for my mother.

Re, her son dying in the bath tub and the necessity of having to move from a thoughtlessly opinionated community -- my mom got stuck in the hoops. Therefore, when I come around further down the line of kids, I am told I am messy and can't have anyone over, ever.

It wasn't until college until I looked at myself and reflected back that I wasn't messy, or dirty, but in fact very organized and tidy.

Any way, old territory.

A few days ago, I went for a run. It has been windy here and so there is a lot of resistance to exercise outside. I have been re-hab-ing my ankle, as it gets stiff with exercise, and it seems my hips get stiff from running now that the orthotics present new angles to my anatomy in motion.

I went running at the fields where Honie and I ran. Half way out, I started to breathe and to cry. I cried at the trees, and began my resistance trek back to the car. What is it about the wind out here that you can get a 360 head wind, but no direction pushes at your back?!

That was a gloomy day. I think I also have allergies for the first time in my life, and it has left me a little lack luster. I slept 14 hours and still woke up tired.

I went for a small measured run the next day, around the Back Bay which is about 1 mile from where I live. I cried a little there, too, because I enjoy running, and I haven't really connected with it for over a year.

I think running is causing me to breathe deep and feel in a certain way. Not as gloomy, still as stuffy,

Angela

P.S. I sent this to the architect of the lofts here, and he wants to meet as he has ideas from the conception of the building. Kind of excited to get the attention of someone professional and capable. Kind of excited about networking, which hasn't been something that is natural to me.

Hope you are well,

A

I like the newsletter.

Much of what you are feeling is still part of the grieving process.  We keep going over the various stages until it is resolved.  I am still going through a few of the stages re the animals that I lost (because of my fault) about 13 years ago.  Can't get through and probably never will the guilt.  Still cry when I think of it.

But it is part of who I am now and it keeps me in line in many ways because of the little lives that depend on me now.

The being tired, definite sure sign of depression which is something I've actually been dealing with a bit lately.  Either that or just being overloaded which lowers our resistance not only to germs etc. but to negative emotions as well.

Trust that you will work through it and keep moving forward.
